Advocacy & Representation
Ensuring an Enabling Legislative And Policy Environment For the Growth of Saccos
Advocacy
KUSCCO serves as an advocate for SACCOs in Kenya, addressing their legal, business, and operational challenges. Our Advocacy and Regulatory Affairs Department
acts as the voice of SACCOs, actively representing SACCOs; interests and protecting their rights as key players in Kenya's socio-economic landscape.
The SACCO sector has experienced remarkable growth over the years, with 359
regulated entities operating in 2022, including 176 Deposit-taking SACCOs (DT
SACCOs) and 183 Non-Withdrawable Deposit-Taking SACCOs (NWDT-SACCOs).
Total membership grew by 7.02% to reach 6.42 million members, representing a
significant portion of the population.
Over the past 60 years, SACCOs have evolved to become the largest SACCO sector in
Africa, boasting over Sh1 trillion in savings, and employing millions. This growth has
been supported by a strong regulatory framework, including the SACCO Societies Act
2008 and oversight by the SACCO Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), ensuring
prudential management, transparency, and compliance.
We recognize the challenges facing SACCOs, including competition from other financial
institutions, capital constraints, taxation, and non-remittance issues. KUSCCO is
committed to addressing these issues head-on, reinforcing the SACCO sector's position as a leader in Africa's financial landscape.
